Birmingham Airport Terminal Guide: Arrivals & Pickup Points

Birmingham Airport has one terminal, and that helps. You never have to work out which building your airline uses or catch a shuttle between them. The part that trips people up is the pick up. There is no free kerb outside arrivals where you can pull in and wait, the car parks closest to the doors charge by the hour, and the rules on stopping are strict.

This Birmingham Airport terminal guide covers the building itself, where passengers come out after landing, and every realistic way to collect someone, from car parks to taxis to trains. Charges, walking distances and opening hours come from the airport’s own pages, checked in September 2026. They change from time to time, so a quick look at the airport’s website before you set off is always sensible.

Birmingham Airport Terminal Guide: How the Building Works

The terminal sits on Airport Way, postcode B26 3QJ. It is one connected building, so arrivals, check-in, security and the boarding gates all share the same roof.

The ground floor holds the main doors, the arrivals exit and four check-in zones labelled A, B, C and D. The arrivals door sits close to the Zone A entrance, which is a handy detail when you are describing a meeting spot over the phone. Security is upstairs on the first floor, with one entrance near Zone A and another near Zone B. Departing passengers head up there. Arriving passengers have no reason to.

The Air-Rail Link is the odd one out. This free people mover joins the terminal to Birmingham International station and arrives on the first floor of the airport. Anyone who steps off it and wants the ground floor takes the lift.

Outside, three multi-storey car parks stand next to the terminal. Passengers leaving through Door A cross the road in front of the Diamond House building to reach Car Park 1. Those leaving through Door C walk towards the Regis building on their left to reach Car Park 2, and Car Park 3 sits on the road opposite that building. If you are collecting someone who knows the airport, door letters and building names are the quickest way to agree where to meet.

Where Passengers Come Out After Landing

From the aircraft to the arrivals hall

Every passenger follows the same order. UK Border Force passport control comes first, then baggage reclaim, then customs, then the arrivals hall where friends, family and drivers wait. Anyone with hand luggage only skips the carousel but not the passport queue.

This page sticks to the practical side of meeting people, so it does not go deep on eGate eligibility or customs allowances. If your passenger is flying in from abroad, most visa-exempt visitors now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding, and the official gov.uk ETA service is the place to check. Strikes or eGate failures can also leave the passport hall jammed, which is one more reason your passenger may appear much later than the board suggests.

Premium Arrivals Fast Track

The airport sells a Premium Arrivals Fast Track lane that skips the general queue at passport control. It costs £20 per person, children need their own ticket, and it must be bought online at least 24 hours before landing. Nobody can buy it at the airport on the day. The lane is open daily from 06:00 to 24:00, and the airport limits sales to 50 tickets an hour so the wait stays at roughly 5 to 15 minutes. From 22 September 2026, confirmation emails carry a QR code that gets scanned at an automatic gate.

Fast Track covers passport control only. Bags still have to reach the belt. If you are waiting in a car park, though, it is worth asking your passenger whether they bought it, because a traveller with Fast Track and no hold bag can walk out well ahead of everyone else on the flight.

How long after landing will your passenger appear?

No guide can give you an exact figure. The time depends on how many flights landed together, how many eGates are open, which passport your passenger holds and whether they checked a bag. As a rough starting point, plan on 30 to 45 minutes after touchdown and treat anything quicker as a bonus.

Also work from the actual landing time, not the scheduled one. The airport’s live arrivals page shows when the aircraft touched down, and that is the number that matters. A flight due at 15:00 that lands at 15:25 changes your whole plan.

Where to Meet Someone Inside the Terminal

Agree a meeting spot before your passenger boards, not after they land. Most people wait in the main arrivals hall, close to the exit from customs, where they can see everyone come through. Ask your passenger to message you the moment they have their bag, then stay where you are and let them find you.

If they will be walking to a car park, tell them which door to use. Door A leads towards Car Park 1. Door C leads towards Car Parks 2 and 3. Car Park 5 is further out, so they should follow the signs to the free shuttle instead, which we cover below.

One group needs no pick up at all: passengers staying at an airport hotel. The airport’s walking table lists the Novotel at 235 metres (about 4 minutes) from the Assisted Travel Reception in the terminal concourse, the Ibis and Ibis Budget at 320 metres (5 minutes) and the Hilton Garden Inn at 370 metres (6 minutes). They can walk, so save yourself the car park fee.

If a bag fails to appear, your passenger should report it to the airline’s baggage desk before leaving the reclaim hall. Anything lost in the terminal itself is handled by the airport, so contact them through the Birmingham Airport website.

Birmingham Airport Pickup Points for Drivers

The airport’s advice for drivers is short. If you are meeting passengers, use Car Park 5. Car Parks 1, 2 and 3 are closer and cost a little more. Drop Off and Premium Set Down exist for dropping people off. The airport lists no free pick up option.

OptionWalk to the terminalTurn-up costBest for
Car Park 1About 270 m, 4 minutes£12 up to 1 hourTight timing, short waits
Car Parks 2 and 3270 m and 300 m, 4 to 5 minutes£13 up to 1 hourSame as Car Park 1
Car Park 55 to 10 minutes, free shuttle£12 up to 1 hourDelays, hold bags, longer waits
Drop Off5 to 10 minutes, free shuttleFree for 10 minutes, then £7 up to 15Departures only
Premium Set DownAbout 1 minute£7 to £8 for the first 15 minutesDepartures only

Walking distances for the car parks come from the airport’s Assisted Travel table and are measured to the Assisted Travel Reception in the ground-floor concourse, so treat them as a close guide to the arrivals door. Prices are the turn-up tariffs and include VAT.

Car Park 5: the airport’s recommended pick up car park

Car Park 5 is an open surface car park, open 24 hours a day. The airport describes the walk to the terminal as 5 to 10 minutes. Its own walking table puts the distance at about 830 metres, so allow longer if you are bringing a trolley, a pushchair or an older relative. A free shuttle bus links the car park to the terminal every 15 minutes, picking up from bus stops 2, 6 and 7. There is no height limit.

The turn-up tariff is £12 for up to an hour, £24 for up to two hours and £48 for up to four. Number plate cameras open the barrier, so there is no ticket to collect, and the pay machines take cards only. For sat nav, use B26 3QJ and follow the signs for Car Park 5. The car park’s what3words location is ///ship.mount.peanut if you want to send an exact spot to someone else.

The airport points pick ups here for a reason. If the flight is late or the bags are slow, the long walk and shuttle do not matter, and you are not sitting in the most expensive spot on site.

Car Parks 1, 2 and 3: closest, but you pay for it

These are the multi-storeys beside the terminal. The airport’s walking table lists Car Park 1 and Car Park 2 at 270 metres each (4 minutes) and Car Park 3 at 300 metres (5 minutes). Turn-up charges are £12 for up to an hour at Car Park 1 and £13 at Car Parks 2 and 3. Two hours costs £24 and £26.

The airport’s own Car Park 1 page says the car park suits anyone collecting arriving passengers, and there is no shuttle to wait for. It works well when you know the flight is on time and your passenger travels light. Multi-storeys carry height restrictions, so check before you drive in with a tall vehicle.

Why Drop Off and Premium Set Down do not suit a pick up

Both are built for departures.

The Drop Off car park gives you 10 minutes free. After that the tariff climbs quickly: £7 up to 15 minutes, £8 up to 20, £14 up to 25 and £20 up to 30. A no return within one hour rule stops you leaving and coming straight back to reset the clock. Ten minutes rarely covers a pick up, because flights and passport queues do not keep to a schedule.

Premium Set Down sits right outside the terminal and charges from the first minute. The airport lists £7 to £8 for the first 15 minutes, depending on which of its pages you read, and the turn-up tariff reaches £25 by the half hour. It is a good place to say goodbye to someone with heavy cases. It is a costly place to wait.

Red routes and penalty charges

Red routes operate on the roads around the airport. Double red lines and repeated signs mark them. You may not stop, unload or park on a red route, even for a moment, and that includes waiting for a passenger. The enforcement charge is £100, reduced to £50 if you pay within 14 days. Parking Charge Notices also cover dropping off or picking up outside a designated area.

The safest habit is simple. Never stop on the approach roads. Go into a car park, park properly and walk.

A worked example of pick up costs

Say your passenger’s flight is due at 15:00 and lands at 15:10. You drive into Car Park 5 at 15:40, meet them at 16:05, and drive out around 16:25. You have stayed about 45 minutes, so the turn-up tariff charges £12.

Now suppose you arrived at the scheduled 15:00 to be safe and left at 16:25. That is nearly an hour and a half, which lands in the £24 band. The difference comes from entering too early, not from the car park. Check the live status on the way, enter when the passenger is close to clearing immigration, and use a text message to fine-tune the rest.

Taxis, Apps and Pre-Booked Cars at Arrivals

The black cab rank

A rank stands just outside the terminal, served by Complete Taxi Management UK, the airport’s approved black cab supplier. You do not need to book. The airport says the fleet is fully wheelchair accessible and that a customer service representative is on hand at the rank. The airport’s transport page lists taxis and private hire as available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Cabs are metered, so the fare depends on time of day, traffic and waiting time. There is no fixed airport price. If a queue has built up after several flights landed together, you may wait a while.

Pre-booked private hire

The airport’s approved private hire partner is Minicabit, which compares licensed operators and shows a fixed price before you book. Many passengers book directly with an operator instead. Either way, follow the collection point in your booking confirmation. Operators do not all use the same arrangement, and guessing at a meeting spot is the fastest way to lose a driver.

Uber and other apps

Uber operates at Birmingham Airport around the clock. The pick up point appears in the app once you confirm a ride, so follow that rather than forum posts, which go out of date. Uber Reserve lets you book ahead. For UberX, Comfort and XL rides, Uber says you can meet your driver up to 45 minutes after your flight’s arrival before late fees apply. For Black and Premier rides the window is 60 minutes.

Trains, Buses and Coaches From Arrivals

The Air-Rail Link is free and operates between 03:30 and 00:30 every day. It leaves from the first floor of Birmingham International station and arrives on the first floor of the airport, so anyone heading for the trains follows the signs there. The ride itself is short.

From Birmingham International, the airport lists three trains an hour to London Euston with Avanti West Coast, and about 70 minutes to Euston on that service. Direct trains to Birmingham New Street take around 10 minutes, with several services an hour from a mix of operators. CrossCountry, West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway and Transport for Wales also stop at the station.

Buses and coaches stop just outside the terminal. National Express West Midlands covers local routes, and National Express and FlixBus coaches go further afield. Timetables and fares change, so check the operator before you rely on a specific service.

If your flight lands after the Air-Rail Link closes at 00:30, plan another route. The taxi rank and pre-booked cars keep going through the night.

For onward travel by road, the trip to the city centre takes 20 to 30 minutes in normal traffic and up to 45 in the rush hour. If you are heading to Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton or another West Midlands town, our cities page lists the thirteen towns we cover with fixed-price transfers.

Meeting Passengers Who Need Extra Help

Assistance is booked through the airline or tour operator, ideally well before travel. Once a passenger has it, the airport’s Assisted Travel team can meet them at arrival. The Assisted Travel Reception sits on the ground floor, in the concourse between Costa and SPAR.

If you are the one driving, the airport has intercom Help Points where the team can collect someone:

  • Premium Set Down, near the disabled parking bays
  • Car Parks 1, 2 and 3, on the ground floor near the disabled bays
  • Birmingham International station, on the first floor next to the Air-Rail Link entrance
  • Outside the terminal, between the Zone A entrance and the arrivals door
  • Inside the terminal, at Zone A check-in

Car Parks 4 and 5 have an accessible bus service instead. The airport warns that anyone collected from a Help Point can wait up to 30 minutes.

Blue Badge holders get 30 minutes free in Car Park 1. Take your registration number and badge to the NCP Customer Service Cabin in the Premium Set Down car park before you leave, and staff will validate the time. Car Park 5 has 30 disabled bays in the first lane on the right as you enter.

Families have a few extra things to plan. Trolleys cost £2, are non-refundable and accept contactless payment only. You will find them outside the terminal, on the ground floor of each multi-storey and in the surface car parks. If you are collecting children in your own car, bring the right child seats with you. When you pre-book a transfer instead, tell the operator each child’s age and weight when you book.

What Drivers Should Know Before Setting Off

From the M42, leave at junction 6 and join the A45, then follow the signs to the airport and on to the car park you want. The airport’s site currently carries a notice about major HS2 motorway works across the West Midlands during 2026, so check your route before you leave.

A few habits save money and stress:

  • Check the live arrivals page before you leave and again when you are close.
  • Enter the car park when your passenger is nearly out, not when the plane lands.
  • Keep your phone charged, because the meeting text is your most useful tool.
  • Give your passenger the door letter or shuttle stop, not just “arrivals”.
  • Never wait on a red route, even with the hazards on.

The airport’s own drop off and pick up page carries the current tariffs, and its live arrivals board shows actual landing times.

Pre-Booked Taxi Service for Birmingham Airport Arrivals

A pre-booked taxi removes most of the decisions above. There is no car park to choose, no tariff ticking over and no queue to join.

BHX Transfers is a taxi and transfer service based at Birmingham Airport, and every airport transfer we take includes live flight tracking and a meet and greet in arrivals. If your flight lands early or late, the pick up time moves without you making a call, and delays do not cost extra. On the day, your driver waits inside arrivals holding a name board. You do not need to hunt for a car outside or work out where to stand.

The fare is fixed and confirmed before you book, with no meter. It stays the same if traffic is heavy or your flight is late. You can get a price online in under a minute on our booking page, and we suggest booking at least 24 hours ahead, earlier in busy holiday periods. For short notice journeys, call 01564 778080. Our drivers are licensed and insured, and we operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Luggage, families and groups

Cases add up fast, especially after a holiday. Our fleet is all Mercedes-Benz. The E-Class and S-Class take four passengers and two large bags each. The V-Class takes seven passengers and six large bags, which suits families and groups arriving together. Complimentary child car seats are available, so mention the ages of your children when you book.

Drop offs, towns and business travel

The same driver can take you to the terminal, so you never need to choose between Premium Set Down and the Drop Off car park. We collect from thirteen West Midlands towns, including Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Sutton Coldfield, and the cities page shows the full list. Regular business travellers can look at our corporate car service, which offers account bookings and receipts.

When a taxi is not the answer

A pre-booked car is not always the right call. If you are travelling alone with hand luggage and no fixed schedule, the Air-Rail Link and a train may suit you better, and a friend with a car may be simpler for a short trip. A pre-booked driver earns its place when the flight is late, the luggage is heavy or the destination is far from a station.

To arrange a transfer, book online with your flight number, or contact us with any questions.

Conclusion

Birmingham Airport is easy to read once you know where the pieces sit. Arrivals exit near Zone A, the closest car parks are a few minutes away on foot, and the airport wants pick ups in a car park rather than at the kerb.

Choose your spot by how the flight is going. A delayed flight or a passenger with hold bags points to Car Park 5, where a long wait costs less and the shuttle handles the walk. Tight timing and a light traveller favour Car Park 1, 2 or 3. Keep away from red routes, agree a door letter or shuttle stop in advance, and check the live arrivals page before you drive in. This Birmingham Airport terminal guide gives you the layout and the numbers, but tariffs move, so confirm them on the airport’s website.

If you would rather not handle any of this yourself, a pre-booked driver waiting in the arrivals hall covers the whole job.
